Frequently asked questions
When should I start buying for college?
Most deep discounts on tech run from late June through early August (Amazon Prime Day, back-to-school sales). Dorm essentials peak between mid-July and mid-August. Textbooks are best bought either at the very start of the semester after you have the syllabus (used or rented from Amazon, Chegg, or the campus bookstore) or via Open Educational Resources where available.
Is Amazon Prime Student worth it?
For most undergraduates with active shipping habits, yes. The student program is half the price of regular Prime, free for 6 months, and includes Prime Video, Music, Reading, and faster shipping. The break-even is around 8-10 deliveries per year vs. paying retail shipping. For students who order textbooks, dorm supplies, and weekly essentials, it pays for itself in the first month.
What do I actually need to bring to a four-year college dorm?
Twin XL bedding (almost every US college supplies Twin XL beds), a mattress topper, power strip with USB ports, desk lamp, shower caddy and flip-flops for shared bathrooms, under-bed storage, hangers, and a small fan. Most schools restrict mini fridges and microwaves to specific sizes and often ban hot plates outright — check your school's housing rules before buying any small appliances.
