Frequently asked questions

Do private college students get different discounts than public college students?

The student-ID-gated discount programs (Amazon Prime Student, Spotify Premium Student, Apple Education, Microsoft Education) treat private and public students identically — a valid US student ID is a valid US student ID. The differences show up at the school level: many private colleges have richer institutional partnerships (free software through campus IT, supplied tech kits, expanded bookstore credits) than smaller public schools.

Is it worth getting a school-issued laptop instead of buying one?

Depends on the school. Some private colleges (especially smaller liberal arts schools and STEM-focused programs) issue or lease laptops to every student as part of tuition — checking your school's IT site before buying one saves an entire purchase. Others charge for a laptop separately or expect students to bring their own. If your school doesn't provide one, our /c/computers category page tracks current student-relevant laptop deals.
